How to Read a Supplement Facts Panel Without Being Sold To

The short version

The front of a supplement box is advertising and the back is regulated. That single asymmetry is the most valuable thing a buyer can internalise, because it means the least designed part of the package is the only part that has to be true.

The one part of the package that has to be true

Everything on the front of a supplement box is marketing: the name, the claim, the sunburst, the word "advanced". Everything on the Supplement Facts panel is regulated. The US Food and Drug Administration specifies what has to appear there, in what order and in what units. That asymmetry is unusual, and it means the plainest, ugliest rectangle on the package is the only part designed to be checked rather than to persuade.

Step one: serving size, before anything else

Every number below it is per serving, and the serving is whatever the manufacturer decided it should be. Most rows on most supplement panels have no percentage. Instead they carry a symbol, usually a double asterisk, footnoted as "Daily Value not established". This is the single most misread mark on a supplement label. It does not mean the ingredient is potent, proprietary or special. It means no reference intake has been set for it — which is true of essentially every amino acid, botanical and novel compound on the market.

Step five: read the other ingredients line

Below the table sits a line most people skip entirely: the non-active components.
